Karnataka Chief Minister Approves Controversial Jobs Bill Mandating Reservation for Kannadigas

On July 17, 2024, Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the state cabinet’s approval of a jobs bill mandating 100% reservation for Kannadigas in the private sector for group C and D posts. If the bill is passed, industries, factories, and other establishments will be required to appoint 50% of local candidates in management categories and 70% in non-management categories.

The bill has sparked a significant backlash from industry leaders. Sameer Nigam, CEO of UPI payments giant PhonePe, expressed his dissatisfaction with X (formerly Twitter), stating, “I build companies. I have created 25,000+ jobs across India! My kids don’t deserve jobs in their home city? Shame.” Nigam criticized the bill for mandating that 50% of all management jobs and 70% of all non-management jobs in private companies be reserved for locals.

The bill also includes a provision requiring locals to be proficient in Kannada to be eligible for employment. This has raised concerns among various stakeholders, including NASSCOM, the leading trade association of the Indian IT and business process management industry. Kundan Singh Rajput, Founder of The Student Chapters (TSC) and MyTAGAPP.COM, criticized the decision, stating, “The decision taken by the state government is totally unfair and it will create discrimination between Indians. Also, companies will be affected more. As a result, people will migrate from the state and companies will relocate themselves as private companies are something which can’t be run this way.”
