Early Life and Background of Arunima Sinha
Arunima Sinha was born on July 20, 1988, in Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, India. She was an accomplished volleyball player and had dreams of joining the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). However, her life took a dramatic turn in 2011 when she was 23 years old.
Tragic Incident of Arunima Sinha
In April 2011, a group of robbers attacked Arunima on a train from Lucknow to Delhi, attempting to snatch her belongings. When she resisted, they pushed her out of the moving train. She fell onto the adjacent tracks, and before she could move, another train ran over her leg, leading to severe injuries. Unfortunately, her left leg had to be amputated below the knee.
Recovery and Determination
Despite this life-altering injury, Arunima was determined not to let it define her. While still recovering in the hospital, she resolved to do something extraordinary—to climb Mount Everest. This decision was met with skepticism by many, but Arunima was undeterred.
She received a prosthetic leg and began rigorous training under the guidance of Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to climb Mount Everest. Arunima also trained at the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation in Uttarakhand, where she built her strength and endurance.
Climbing Mount Everest
On May 21, 2013, after months of intense training and overcoming numerous challenges, Arunima Sinha made history by becoming the first female amputee to reach the summit of Mount Everest. People across India and the world celebrated her achievement, and she became a symbol of courage and determination.
Later Achievements of Arunima Sinha
Arunima didn’t stop with Mount Everest. She went on to scale several other peaks, including Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, Mount Elbrus in Europe, Mount Kosciuszko in Australia, Mount Aconcagua in South America, Mount Carstensz Pyramid in Indonesia, and Mount Vinson in Antarctica. She became the first female amputee to climb these seven summits, completing the feat in 2019.
Recognition and Honors
Arunima Sinha has received numerous awards and honors for her achievements. She received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 2015. Various organizations and institutions have also recognized her for her contributions to sports and her role as an inspiration to others.
Personal Life and Legacy of Arunima Sinha
Arunima has also written an autobiography titled “Born Again on the Mountain: A Story of Losing Everything and Finding It Back”, in which she shares her journey from the tragic accident to conquering Everest and beyond.
