Nationwide Protest: Doctors and Nursing Staff Demand Justice for Kolkata Trainee Doctor’s Rape and Murder
Across India, thousands of doctors and nursing staff are holding a 24-hour nationwide protest as they express their outrage over the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a government-run hospital in Kolkata last week. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced the protest today.
On the other hand, the largest organization of medical staff in the country put forth five demands. However, they all are raising their voices because they are all concerned about safety issues and well-being.

Their Demands in Nationwide Protest
- A thorough overhaul of working and living conditions of resident doctors
- Central law to check violence against healthcare professionals in workplaces
- Improved security measures in hospitals
- Fast-track courts to hear cases of violence against healthcare professionals
- Compensation for victims of violence
The IMA has clarified that all essential services will be maintained during the 24-hour protest, and casualties will be manned. Therefore, routine OPDs will not function, and elective surgeries will not be conducted. Hence, there are withdrawal of services in all the sectors.

The whole medical staff want justice against the rapists. Through this protest, the people are calling government to take strict action, as well as, immediate measures to address the safety concerns of healthcare professionals. Not only this but also IMA demands a comprehensive overhaul of the working and living conditions of resident doctors.
Additionally, they also demanding for a central law in order to check the violence against healthcare professionals in workplaces.
