18 Lakhs Fees for General, Free for SC/ST: Unpacking the Fee Disparities in EMBA Programs

Exploring the EMBA Fee Structure and Course Curriculum

Recently, I explored the fee structure and course curriculum for EMBA (Executive MBA) courses. The EMBA is an online program offered by top institutions, including IITs, IIMs, and NITs. Designed for working professionals, it holds the same value as any postgraduate degree program and has a less competitive entry barrier compared to other programs. However, the fee structure for these courses was shocking.

Disparities in EMBA Fees

The fees for an EMBA in these prestigious institutions range between 3 lakhs to 42 lakhs, with an average of 12-15 lakhs. Surprisingly, tuition fees are waived for SC, ST, and PWD students, and the eligibility criteria are advantageous for them as per reservation policies.

Questioning the Fairness of Fee Waivers

If this course is designed for working people who need work experience for admission, why is there such discrimination? On one side, students pay extremely high fees, while on the other, the complete fees are waived for others. This raises a significant question in 2024. The issue doesn’t stop here. Fees for undergraduate programs were revised in 2016 from 90 thousand to 2 lakhs of IITs per year, with tuition fees for SC, ST students completely waived. How fair is this system?

 Case Study: IIT Delhi

As seen in the picture, IIT Delhi has set an 18 lakhs INR fee structure for their EMBA program, yet the fees are totally waived off for SC/ST students. This disparity begs the question: why are such thoughts being implanted in the minds of the youth? What are we trying to teach the future leaders of our nation? Is this policy designed to engage brilliant minds with the seeds of discrimination?

Impact on the Nation’s Development

These policies provide enough clarity as to why the country is still struggling in the race for development. Changing the mentality of any person becomes impossible once you have already fed discrimination into their minds. Perhaps the government believes that the general category of India comprises the wealthiest individuals, especially boys, and they don’t need any favor. They are expected to pay high fees, fight to secure a seat with high fees, and then pay taxes until death.

The Broader Implications

Another question arises: despite being government colleges, why have these top institutions set such high fees? For example, the EMBA fees at IIT Bombay are 42 lakhs. This fee exemption is not limited to EMBA programs but extends to BTech, BDes, MTech, MBA, and other courses.

Conclusion

The disparity in fee structures between general category students and SC/ST students in India’s top institutions raises crucial questions about fairness and equality. While the intention behind fee waivers may be to provide opportunities for underprivileged communities, the high fees for others could be seen as unfair and discriminatory. This issue needs to be addressed to ensure a fair and just educational system for all. For regular updates join our WhatsApp channel.
